What is Facial?

A facial is a hands on treatment with a licensed practitioner that offers one on one care for your skin. A facial will typically include a customized process of cleansing, exfoliating, extraction, steaming, and facial massage to relax the muscles and fascia of the face, neck, and decollete. These steps are customized to an individual needs and will vary in length depending on the length of the facial and your particular needs and goals. A facial can be an incredibly relaxing experience while offering you time and space with a skin expert to work on any particular concerns you have.

Facials can address concerns such as acne, uneven skin tone and texture, hydration, dryness, aging and exposure effects such as sun damage or fine lines, hyperpigmentation, skin laxity, redness, and other sensitivities.

The Steps of a Basic Facial

The following is a rough outline of what a basic facial could look like. Keep in mind that some estheticians specialize in other types of facials like hydrafacials, buccal massage, microcurrent, etc and different estheticians have different products and tools that they are trained to use.

  • Consultation: A facial should begin with a consultation. If you are a new client, the esthetician will have you fill out a questionnaire that may include questions regarding your skin concerns, your allergies, medications and supplements you take, and products you are currently using.
  • Cleansing: Each facial will begin with a cleanse, or double cleanse. This will remove any makeup, products, or environmental build up on the skin so we are working on clean skin.
  • Skin Analysis: Your esthetician will do a detailed skin analysis using a magnified lamp. This allows them to determine your basic skin type (dry, oily, combination, sensitive or normal), make note of any current skin conditions (acne, blackheads, whiteheads, aging, sun-damage, dehydration, etc.), and make a plan for what products would be best for you as you move forward.
  • Steam: Some facials use a machine that directs a thin vapor of warm steam to your face. This should feel relaxing and helps soften any blackheads and whiteheads to be extracted later. If you have very sensitive skin, the esthetician may not use steam. If the steam ever feels uncomfortable, feel free to speak up as the esthetician wants you to be comfortable.
  • Exfoliation: Exfoliation may be done as a physical form (scrub) or a chemical form (enzymatic, acid, peels) depending on your skin’s needs. This step can help decongest skin, digest and/or remove dead skin cells, and allow for greater product penetration.
  • Extractions: This is a process of removing congestion in the skin and extracting clogged oils if you want it/need it. Everyone has a different pain tolerance for extractions, but you will typically feel mild pressure. This step can be uncomfortable, especially on thin or Rosacea prone skin. Extractions can cause broken capillaries and discoloration if done improperly so we always recommend leaving this step to a professional.
  • Facial Massage: Using classic strokes like effleurage to both relax you and stimulate your skin and facial muscles, the esthetician will work your face, neck and decollete, and sometimes your scalp.
  • Finishing Mask: This final mask will be targeted to your skin type and condition. During the mask which can be on the client’s face and neck between 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the treatment, the esthetician may massage your arms, hands and/or décolleté.
  • Final Products: Application of toner, serums, eye cream, moisturizer, oils, etc.
  • Advice: The Esthetician will often finish the treatment with advice on how they think you can better care for your skin and recommend any products to use daily. What you do at home will have a greater effect on your skin and the time it takes to heal any conditions and reach your goals since you are using it every day.

Who Gives A Facial?
A professional facial should be given by a licensed esthetician with special training in skin care and on the skin care products they are using. They are also called aestheticians or facialists. You’ll want to find an esthetician who is knowledgeable, fastidious, and passionate about their work. Some estheticians specialize in certain areas like massage, acne, or specific treatments.

How Often Should I Get A Facial? It varies from person to person and will depend on the condition of your skin. But ideally, facials are recommended once monthly as that is the length of time it takes for skin to regenerate. We rarely recommend more than that. If monthly is not doable, then we recommend having a facial at least four times a year, as the season changes. You may need it more frequently if you are trying to clear up a case of acne, especially at the beginning. Otherwise, once a month is plenty. You can overdo it, especially if you have sensitive skin. A good esthetician will advise you in the treatment room and change the facial to something suitable for your skin, and make recommendations based on your condition and goals.
